Toyota Hilux

Australia's No 1 selling 4x4 ute

You just cant kill it with a stick. !!

In the beginning Toyota needed to become serious in a cynical market about Japanese manufactured vehicles in a environment very similar to the  current market and the Chinese manufacturers.

The year was 1968 and the production of the Hilux began as the RN10 short wheel base 1.5 lt engine . A long wheel base was added in 1969.

1972 and the new luxury cabin came into being with the RN20. 1975 and the SR5 pack was introduced also engine improved( refer list of engines) In 1979 was the most significant for the 4x4 market as the Hilux was named  the first generation 4WD. Yes this was as I am concerned the beginning of Hilux. 4WD . A compact pickup ute, great clearance and cheap service and engine parts. In 1979 luxury  and ute was like chalk and cheese and fast was never associated with them but the went all day every day and you could not kill the mongrel things with a jack hammer.

1981 and the USA got serious about the Hilux and Toyota knew then they were on a winner. Outside the USA the marketing began for the Surf and or Fore runner.

1984 cabin style were added and fuel injection was the latest technology obviously in Australia with the introduction of unleaded fuel this opened the market right up. In the USA fuel injection was the new buzz and in fact diesel was discontinued there for that market..

1989  and the redesign here really is the baby of today's  Toyota Hilux., Smooth engine, comfortable interior , a good selection of cabin styles ( dual cab, Xtra ca1983 Hiluxb),  air con and power steer and more.

1884 HiluxProgress slowed until 1995 and another redesign the Tacoma in the USA and the Hilux elsewhere finally differed and each had a different frame, The USA model became its own from the rest of the world..

The Tacoma became itself. the rest of the world including Australia maintained its love of the Hilux especially the tough diesel 4x4 and the suburban dweller discovered  that dual cabs  could make ideal work/ family vehicles. All this was aided by some countries government making commercial vehicles a tax right off. Toyota stumbled on to a winner here with trades people and fleet buyers..

Things just plodded along until 2005 where hilux had a  refresh and increased in size , a better frame and now officially referred to as mid sized. The Tacoma was evolving separately in the USA and was now based on the Prado chassis.

Much of the Tacoma crossed over now into the Hilux being assembled in Thailand , South Africa and Argentina.

The rest of it really is Modern history and any Toyota dealer can fill in the gaps here.

Some minor trivia:

The Hilux in 2007 was the first truck to make it to the magnetic North pole,

The war in Africa between Libya and Chad was called the Toyota war because of the way Toyota Hilux was used a cavalry.

Hilux  is the overall third biggest seller in Australia in 2009-2010 beaten only by Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla

Toyota Hilux 2010-11

More Power, More payload, more greener.

According to popular reporters the Toyota has altered the 2.5 D-4D engine, the popular power unit in the Hilux range,

to produce significantly more power and extra torque. Maximum output has been increased from 118 to 142bhp,

a rise of 20 per cent.

Maximum torque is up by 18Nm to a maximum 343Nm at 2,000rpm.

These improvements have been achieved by the introduction of a new high-output turbocharger and

new fuel injectors, improving throttle response and performance.

The pistons have been upgraded to a new high-strength material.  Driving performance is improved,

the changes have reduced Toyota  Hilux’s zero to 62mph acceleration time by 2.5 seconds to 12.5 seconds.

For the greenies, Emissions is unchanged, however, at 219g/km – one of the lowest figures in the vehicle type.

The 2.5 D-4D engine is matched to a five-speed manual transmission and is available in all three Hilux body styles:

Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab.

New improved  payload Increases in Hilux’s gross vehicle weights have assisted in payload performance, (Check local regulation)

notably for Double Cab models where capacity has increased by 35kg on the HL2 Double Cab and 25kg on the HL3 Double Cab.
