Chrysler Jeep Compass
First Jeep Soft-roader Petrol / Diesel
In Australia jeep emerged in this form in late 1994. The Cherokee a compact yet effective vehicle powered by the old faithful hemi style engine. No airbag but that changed in 1995 and on the evolution of this vehicle continued. Lifestyle changes through the nineties saw the emergence of the Rav 4 a great move by Toyota, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda CRV, Suzuki Vitara and a myriad of smaller 4x4 vehicles designed especially for the city based buyer looking for that little difference in a car. Jeep are always evolving, like them or not jeep has stuck its beak out where no other car manufacturer has ever tried and thrust this on the buying public yet again. Now here is a ballsy marketing idea a soft road style vehicle uniquely jeep to fill that gap . Maybe that market between Cherokee and wrangler buyers whom just want to get through the city traffic.. The Compass is a four door five seat, with two engine styles. First is the: 2.4 125 Kw Petrol 2.0 103 Kw Diesel (VW sourced) The petrol has the option of from the 6 speed manual of a CVT Automatic , the diesel is manual only. Unfortunately I will mention now that the diesel engine is $4000 more. Features include fully independent suspension, the super dooper jeep freedom drive 4x4 system, front and side air bags, ABS, electronic stability program and electronic roll mitigation . Usual bits and pieces also like power windows and cruise control. Measurements are length 4405mm width 1810mm and ground clearance of 200mm. with this clearance this does have a edge on many others in this category like the CRV only 185mm. Australian pricing from $32490 up to $40490. Fuel economy very good 9.5 ltrs/100kms for the petrol and 6.5 ltrs/100kms for the diesel.
On the surface its a snazzy little package about the size inside of a CRV with the usual drivers side foot well cramp ness as per jeep. Disappointment here again and I wont blame jeep as they are all at fault is the increase of $4000 for the diesel. Its modern , has the jeep looks and I would consider this a safe vehicle with the possible of some off road ability. I would not cross the Simpson desert in it but Mum could easily maneuver over the kerbs in the local shopping centre or school car park very easily in this. Like many makes and models like this before be aware resale may not be the best. Its a jeep thing
